WONDERFUL JAPANESE SHIBAYAMA & GOLD LACQUER HAND-PAINTED FAN MEIJI PERIOD 1880. Antique, wonderful quality Japanese fan – Meiji period, circa 1880. The 2 large, external sticks are superbly decorated with Maki-E layered gold lacquer depicting birds and flower blossoms – they are also inlayed with Mother-of-pearl and red coral in Shibayama style – the carved ball, attached at the bottom is also decorated with gold lacquer. The fan itself is made of paper – hand painted with charming scenes, on both sides – one side with a pastoral village on the water scene showing a crab fisherman – the other side with 2 ducks in pond – the painting of ducks with some gold splashes. Very good condition for the age – the external and inner sticks are FLAWLESS with no losses or repairs – the paper has a couple of small tears and it could use a small repair – no lost pieces – please examine all close-up pictures. When closed it measures 30 cm long (sticks only) with the tussles it is 55 cm long – when opened it is 49 cm wide. AGE & AUTHENTICITY GUARANTEED.
