Meissen Hand Painted Watteau Scene Floral & Gold Scrolls 9 3/8 Inch Plate
Meissen Hand Painted Watteau Scene Floral & Gold Scrolls 9 3/8 Inch Plate Beautiful early to mid 19th century porcelain cabinet plate. Hand painted with a central scene of a courting couple. The girl is wearing a Georgian/Colonial peach gown with white ruffled drape sleeves, a green underskirt and a white floating neck ruff. She has a book of music in on her lap. She is sitting on a rock in front of a statue/monument with an angel or cherub and is serenaded by a Colonial / Georgian gentlemen in a purple coat and yellow waist coat, playing a flute. The scene is framed in elaborate fancy gold gilt scrollwork designs. With a butterfly and three small bugs around the scene. The edge of the plate has four sections of hand painted flowers in pink, blue, yellow and orange. Each section is framed by gold gilt scrollwork and flowers. With gold gilding along the edge of the plate. Marked on the reverse with the underglaze blue crossed swords mark used by the royal Meissen factory between 1814 and 1860. There is a cross slash through the mark. Has a glazed over in manufacture flake to the foot rim, very minor wear to the gilt floral and scrollwork designs, but a significant amount of wear to the gilding along the edge. Still a a beautiful plate. Measures approximately 9 3/8 inches wide. This is an antique and may have small in manufacture defects that do not effect the display of the piece.
